Gersiane Simo's Story

Hi, my name is Gersiane Simo, and living with sickle cell disease has deeply shaped who I am today.

Even though I may often appear healthy on the outside, my daily reality is very different. Sickle cell disease has challenged me physically, emotionally, and academically, but it has also made me stronger, more patient, and more determined to succeed.

I was born and raised in Cameroon, where managing sickle cell disease was especially difficult. The hot climate often triggered painful crises, and access to proper healthcare was limited. I remember days when I was in intense pain but had no choice but to endure it quietly. Sometimes medication was not easily available, and my family had to do everything they could to support me.

Those early experiences taught me resilience at a very young age.

🌍 Starting Over in a New Country

After spending four years separated from my mother, I finally moved to the United States to reunite with her. That moment was emotional and life-changing, but it also came with many challenges.

I had to adjust to a completely new environment, culture, and language while still managing my health. Learning English, adapting to a new school system, and dealing with pain at the same time felt overwhelming. There were moments when I felt lost and isolated.

Still, I kept going.

Sickle cell disease has had a strong impact on my education. There are times when the pain becomes so severe that I cannot attend school or even get out of bed. I have had hospital visits during important school periods, which made it difficult to keep up with my studies.

Despite those challenges, I have always pushed myself to do my best. I spend extra time catching up on missed work, translating materials when needed, and staying focused on my goals. My condition has taught me discipline, perseverance, and the importance of not giving up, even when things are difficult.

🩺 A Dream Rooted in Understanding

Emotionally, living with sickle cell disease is not easy. The uncertainty of when the next pain crisis will happen can be stressful and frightening. Sometimes it feels like I have no control over my own body.

But these experiences have also helped me grow. They have made me more empathetic, more patient, and more understanding of others who face struggles in their lives.

Despite everything, sickle cell disease has given my life a sense of purpose. It has inspired me to pursue a career in medicine, especially hematology. I want to help people who are going through the same pain and challenges I have experienced. I want to become a doctor who understands not only the science behind the disease, but also the emotional reality of living with it.
