Founded in 1966, the Spanish American Center is the oldest social services organization serving the Hispanic and Latino community in Worcester County. Today it is governed by a majority Latino Board of Directors, led by a Latina Executive Director, and staffed by many bilingual and bicultural employees. Drawing on the wealth of Latino traditions as well as principles of American democracy, the Center has become known for its inclusive and collaborative approach that benefits residents of all backgrounds.

Over the decades, the Center has broadened its services in response to the needs of the community, while staying true to its mission (“to respond to the social, health, educational and cultural needs of the Leominster community and surrounding areas, especially the Hispanic/Latino community limited by language, poverty and access”) vision and values.

Today, the Center provides an array of programs designed to address the needs of the community. These include a Food Pantry, Domestic Violence community-based prevention and education, English as a Second Language (ESOL) classes, STEM-based Crossroads After-School program, summer Verano Alegre youth program, Elder Services, legal clinics, emergency assistance, and individualized Information & Referral services.

The Center's growth to a comprehensive human service organization reflects the diversity of our region and the need for culturally competent, accessible care. As a resource for practical help and connection, the Spanish American Center works to uphold its founding vision: a safe, healthy, peaceful, and prosperous community where every person can participate fully.
