Cystic fibrosis (CF) has always been a cause close to my heart. My cousins, Michael and Joey, were both born with CF. When they were diagnosed, there was little hope for a cure. But thanks to incredible advancements in medicine, treatments now exist for 90% of those with CF. Unfortunately, Michael and Joey fall into the 10% for whom these treatments don’t work due to a rare genetic mutation. Michael and I were especially close—we grew up side by side, sharing birthdays, family gatherings, and even attending college at West Chester University together. Losing him at just 25 was heartbreaking and devastating for me and my family. I’m running in his memory and for Joey, who continues to fight.
