Donating Our Birthdays

Last May, Marlese Nel and I celebrated a most memorable birthday together with the staff of our partner nonprofit PEN. Marlese is ASAP's coordinator in South Africa. She owned a store of educational toys and now orders all the resources for our toy library centers. She and I were born on May 18 and 19, 1953. The PEN staff in the photos help daycare owners become teachers and their daycares become well-run preschools.

It was thrilling to visit preschools and see children working together on a puzzle, threading beads, enjoying a memory game...children who had never played with toys before...children learning through play...children gaining the foundation to succeed in school thanks to ASAP donors!

PEN desperately needs a second vehicle like the one below, parked in front of the the Kagiso resource center. The car and double-wide trailer were donated by a South African tile company.

Branding on the new car will help avoid car jackings. Removable seats will enable transport of equipment like balance beams. ASAP hubs are located where they are most needed-- in high-crime, urban areas and isolated, rural areas. PEN's managers and coaches must be safe on the road.
