We are organizing this fundraising campaign as leaders of congregations and community organizations in Northern Arizona, on behalf of a longtime Northern Arizona Interfaith Council (NAIC) leader. Maria has lived in Sedona for more than 25 years and needs financial support for breast cancer surgery and treatment. (We are using a pseudonym to protect her privacy.)

We are Charlie McCallie, pastor of The Commons Church in Flagstaff and a fellow member of the NAIC board of directors with Maria, and Linda Martinez, a founder and current member of NAIC in Sedona. We are grateful to Maria for giving back to her community through her leadership in NAIC, which works for the common good. While our congregations are helping to support her, it is not enough to cover treatment for the severity of her cancer, so we are asking for your help.

We would like you to meet Maria, a long time resident, hard working mother of two, and humble leader. Here is her story in her own words:

Today, I open my heart to you. I'm a mother to two wonderful children in their teens and twenties, who are the light of my life and my greatest motivation to keep going.

The past few months have been indescribably difficult. Last year, my beloved brother passed away after a coma which he never woke up from. Just months later, my dear mother, who fought her own brave battle against cancer, died. Her struggle taught me the strength of the human spirit, and now, with her memory as my guide, I face my own challenge: a breast cancer diagnosis. My world has been shaken and I am scared, but I have chosen to fight with all the strength I have, for myself, for my children, and for the memory of those I love.

My Path to Healing: Mastectomy

Given the nature of my cancer with multiple tumors, the treatment option recommended for me is a mastectomy (total removal of the breast). Although it is a significant surgery, it offers the best opportunity to ensure the complete elimination of all affected areas. After surgery, I will likely receive hormone therapy for several years to prevent cancer cells from returning.

The Cost of Hope and Healing

The path ahead is long and, honestly, overwhelming. I make a very moderate income and do not have health insurance. My work is physically demanding, and I will need to recover for several months after the surgery, so I will not have income during that time.

For a unilateral mastectomy in Arizona, the cost ranges but averages $40,000. In addition are the costs of doctor visits, biopsies, the MRI, hormone therapy treatments (which can cost thousands of dollars per year), and pain medications. Every visit, every medication, every procedure represents a financial burden that I simply cannot face alone.

That is why today, with humility and hope, I ask for your help. Every donation, no matter how small, is a breath of life, a relief from this immense burden. It will allow me to focus on my recovery and continue to be here for my children, without the constant anxiety of how I will cover the medical expenses.

Una lucha por la vida: Apoya a María en su batalla contra el cáncer

Como líderes de congregaciones y organizaciones comunitarias del norte de Arizona, organizamos esta campaña de recaudación de fondos en nombre de María, líder del Consejo Interreligioso del Norte de Arizona (NAIC) desde hace mucho tiempo. Hoy, me abro a ustedes con el corazón en la mano. Soy madre de dos hijos maravillosos, adolescentes y veinteañeros, que son la luz de mi vida y mi mayor motivación para seguir adelante.

Los últimos meses han sido indescriptiblemente difíciles. El año pasado, mi amado hermano partió de este mundo tras un coma del que nunca despertó. Apenas unos meses después, falleció mi querida madre, quien libró su propia valiente batalla contra el cáncer. Su lucha me enseñó la fortaleza del espíritu humano, y ahora, con su recuerdo como mi guía, enfrento mi propio desafío: un diagnóstico de cáncer de mama. Mi mundo ha sido sacudido y tengo miedo, pero he elegido luchar con toda la fuerza que tengo, por mí, por mis hijos y por el recuerdo de quienes amo.

Mi camino hacia la curación: Mastectomía

Dada la naturaleza de mi cáncer, con múltiples tumores, la opción de tratamiento recomendada para mí es una mastectomía (extirpación total de la mama). Si bien es una cirugía significativa, ofrece la mejor oportunidad para asegurar la eliminación completa de todas las áreas afectadas. Después de la cirugía, probablemente recibiré terapia hormonal durante varios años para prevenir la reaparición de células cancerosas.

El costo de la esperanza y la sanación

El camino por delante es largo y, sinceramente, abrumador. Gano muy poco y no tengo seguro médico. Mi trabajo es físicamente exigente y necesitaré recuperarme durante varios meses después de la cirugía, así que no tendré ingresos durante ese tiempo.

En Arizona, el costo de una mastectomía unilateral varía, pero promedia los $40,000. Además, están los costos de las consultas médicas, las biopsias, la resonancia magnética, los tratamientos de terapia hormonal (que pueden costar miles de dólares al año) y los analgésicos. Cada consulta, cada medicamento, cada procedimiento representa una carga económica que simplemente no puedo afrontar sola.

Por eso hoy, con humildad y esperanza, les pido su ayuda. Cada donación, por pequeña que sea, es un soplo de vida, un alivio para esta inmensa carga. Me permitirá concentrarme en mi recuperación y seguir siendo un pilar para mis hijos, sin la angustia constante de cómo cubriré los gastos médicos.
