STREETS FOR PEOPLE! ¡CALLES PARA GENTE!

We were founded on the simple belief that everyone deserves dependable and affordable transportation options and access to streets that are safe and vibrant.

Since December of 2019, the Providence Streets Coalition has been powered by our community’s drive to fight for change in our streets. Everyday people like you, who are passionate about making Providence and Rhode Island a more equitable place to live, work, and play, have empowered and inspired our grassroots advocacy.

Together, we secured $15 million in state funding to Save RIPTA, ushered in a wave of expansion for Providence’s Urban Trail Network, passed the Green & Complete Streets Ordinance, built a (temporary) bike lane on Hope Street, blocked the removal of the South Water Street urban trail, stopped the deeply flawed Multi-Hub Bus Plan in its tracks, and gathered the families of the victims of traffic violence on North Main Street to demand change. Our community of volunteers built a best-in-class crash map and data portal, painted bus islands, cut down foliage to make sidewalks passable, and testified at countless public meetings.

Our advocacy at City Hall and the State House has achieved significant victories, and we are poised to build on that success in the coming months. But the reality of the moment puts our work and our progress in jeopardy.

As we witness an extreme shift in Washington, with incoming leadership openly hostile to reducing emissions and supporting public transit, combined with another looming fiscal cliff for RIPTA and an expected $400M budget deficit in Rhode Island, your support will be critical in ensuring we have the means and resources to continue our tireless advocacy for more equitable transportation systems.

As a nonprofit social welfare organization, Providence Streets Coalition turns dollars into action.

Our small but mighty staff and board are leading the charge in the fight for safer streets and more transportation options, backed by a rising tide of countless individuals, organizations, and legislators fighting alongside us!

ABOUT PVD STREETS

The Providence Streets Coalition (PSC) is an alliance of 42 community organizations, local businesses, schools, neighborhood associations, and engaged individuals supporting human-centered streets in Providence and beyond. We are building the relationships and advocacy tools necessary to change physical infrastructure, budgets, legislation, and mobility systems within Rhode Island’s transportation sector. We are working towards a transportation system that supports equitable, affordable, and sustainable movement for people of all ages, incomes, and abilities.

Partnered with the RIPTA to secure $15 million in operational funding for the agency
Partnered with the the City of Providence to build 43 miles of its Great Streets urban trail network
Partnered with the Providence City Council to secure amendments reducing or eliminating parking minimums and prohibiting the construction of new gas stations in the City’s Comprehensive Plan
Released the first ever PVD Crash Data Map, visualizing 14 years of car vs pedestrian/cyclist crashes.
Pushed for the establishment of the North Main Street Task Force
Championed the successful passage of Providence’s Green & Complete Streets Ordinance
Created the Safe & Creative Streets Mini-Grant Program, now under the RI Department of Health as the RI Streets Transformation Project
Stopped the State of Rhode Island’s deeply flawed Multi-Hub Bus Project in its tracks
Changed the City’s budget ordinance to divert speed camera revenue to a traffic calming fund
Hosted community walks, transit adventures, and family bike rides to build community in a fun, creative, and engaging way.
