Naturopathic Doctors in Pennsylvania are currently limited in who they can see, what they can order and what they can prescribe. By getting licensed, all of these factors will be expanded.

Current Legislative Efforts

In 2023 the Board of Medicine made progress in approving the House Bill 16A-4953 Naturopathic Doctors to be Registered. This will likely be finalized in January 2024. The Pennsylvania Association of Naturopathic Physicians will then be moving forward with pursuing licensure. We have an amazing lobbyist and a handful of passionate individuals who are working on making naturopathic medicine regulated in PA, thus more accessible. The money raised will be primarily going towards lobbying efforts. It is important for us during this critical time period to be able to keep our lobbyist, so our organization can stay up to date on when support is needed and move forward.

Who Are Naturopathic Doctors?

Naturopathic Medicine is a system of healthcare that blends modern scientific knowledge with natural medicine. Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) use evidence-based natural modalities—such as nutrition, lifestyle counseling, exercise, meditation, homeopathy, and botanicals—to promote wellness. NDs work according to a set of basic principles to address underlying causes of disease, and to understand illness & well-being in the context of a person’s life experience.

The naturopathic approach to healthcare emphasizes patient education and improving individualmresponsibility for self-care. NDs work with patients to incorporate safe natural therapies to be usedalongside conventional medicine—referred to as“integrative medicine.” In clinics and hospitals with integrative centers, NDs work with MDs, RNs, RDs,DCs, NPs and other providers in collaboration andare sought as experts in drug/nutrient interactions.

Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) complete 4-year,doctoral programs at federally accredited naturopathic medical colleges and universities. NDs sit for national, post-graduate, competency exams and may enter clinical residency programs and take licensing and board exams.

What Other States are Licensed?

Currently, 26 jurisdictions (23 states plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands) have licensing or registration laws for naturopathic doctors (NDs/NMDs)
