MYA Network is a unique community of clinicians, patients, and activists. We are working to integrate abortion into primary health care and to culturally normalize abortion.

This year, we accomplished our goal of establishing a training program for clinicians in New York!

We kicked off the Early Abortion Training, Integration and Access Project on January 22, 2025, after raising seed money from generous individuals. We used those funds to:

Increase training for abortion care by completing a one-year pilot project to train midwives in manual uterine aspiration (for abortion and miscarriage care) and medication abortion. We leveraged that success to be one of four organizations selected by NY State for funding to implement training programs. Contracts are due to be signed and funds released soon.
Facilitate integration of abortion into mainstream practice settings by training clinicians who already have practices and are ready to provide abortion services after training.
Increase access to abortion care for people with limited resources by becoming a part of the New York State Medicaid program and by partnering with the National Abortion Federation (NAF) to help fund abortion procedures!

What’s NEXT?

As we train clinicians, we need to help them to integrate abortion care into varied practice settings. This involves a lot of troubleshooting! Issues can include institutional resistance to abortion, staff conflicts, security issues, departmental rivalries, competency definitions, procedures and protocols, malpractice, billing, and more. As we work with individual practices, each with its own unique set of challenges, we will be creating models that can streamline the process as more clinicians are trained.

Patients need to be able to find primary care clinicians who provide medical care related to abortion. MYA Network’s website links patients to clinicians who offer personalized early abortion care. This website needs to be reorganized to support the network's growth. Once we accomplish this, MYA Network can take advantage of Google's free advertising (up to 10k per month). As the referral network grows, we need a staff person to respond to patients.

Culturally, we continue our work to normalize abortion. We know that abortion is common (1 in 4 US women will have an abortion) and safe, yet stigma and disinformation dominate conversation. Our images of early abortion tissue in The Guardian and The New York Times went viral and were presented in a panel at the Whitney Museum. These images continue to be used by healthcare providers, artists, and activists worldwide.

This year, MYA Network has obtained seed money for another important project. Dr. Fleischman has recorded interviews of over 350 anonymous conversations with patients who have completed an abortion at her Early Options practice. They offer a rarely discussed, deeply personal perspective. We want to make this library available to the public. Listen here to the interview that was featured in The New York Times.

MYA Network is small and nimble - we’re an incubator for projects that fill gaps. The clinicians of MYA Network have published articles, presented at conferences, testified for legislation, started a national organization to protect the privacy of electronic medical records related to abortion (and other sensitive services), and helped create a national reproductive healthcare hotline. We collaborate with like-minded organizations working toward reimagining abortion care.
