Story
In 2018, our founders began individually advocating for their neighbors and friends in privatized military housing. They watched as their friends felt helpless while living in substandard conditions and took it upon themselves to get educated about the military housing program. They stepped in to help when they could. Unfortunately, our founders eventually ended up having their own dismal experiences in their privatized military homes, and they decided they could no longer stand for it.
Banding together in four states across the U.S., and with "Mama Bear" tenacity, our founders created a fully remote nonprofit entirely staffed by amazing volunteers that have served over 1,800 families since May 2021. With a commitment to serve only at the pleasure of military members and their families, our founders promised to offer education, support, and protection to military families across the country. Since AFHA's establishment, our team has expanded to include subject-matter experts in various topics, multiple volunteers focusing on resident casework, and a stellar board of officers. AFHA's team knows that, undoubtedly, readiness starts with a safe home.
Because AFHA's team is comprised of all volunteers, your donations go straight to work helping service members and their families! We assist families by empowering them to know their rights, and also purchase things like mold-typing tests, lead-presence tests, water quality screening, micro grants for food and shelter, free mental health support, window guards to protect small children, and more. Every penny counts! And with the generosity of the Carolyn Smith Foundation, who has awarded us a matching donation of up to $12,500, we are hoping to raise enough through this event to continue our hard work in keeping military families safe.
