About Abolition Day

Commemorating the Great Mansfield Freedom vs. Slavery Riot of October 10, 1836, Abolition Day celebrates abolitionist history in Mansfield, which, "with only a few thousand residents, had one of the biggest anti-slavery societies in the state - larger even than some in much more populated places. (...) Mansfield was more than just another status quo New England town. It was a place where an exceptional number of people advocated for the end of America’s most evil institution."

In addition to celebrating this history, Abolition Day seeks to make the connections to the abolition movements of today. We want Mansfield to once again be on the front lines in advocating for the end of America's most evil institutions.
