This webinar is a follow-up to our highly attended course The Basics of Passive Solar Home Design* we will look at more advanced passive solar features through the use of various tools to help design or redesign residential buildings. She obtained a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Arizona, published a book on Passive Solar design - The Sun-Inspired House: home designs warmed and brightened by the sun. The book and her design philosophies incorporate Passive Solar Design Strategies; Guidelines for Home Building developed by NREL, and are continuously evolving to adapt to low-energy construction methods, climate changes, and housing technologies. Her work has been published in Fine Homebuilding, Home Energy, Mother Earth News, Solar Today and Home Power. Debbie serves on the board of directors for ASES (American Solar Energy Society), the ASES Solar Buildings Technical Division, and the steering committees for both the National Solar Tour and the National Solar Conference. She is a LEED GA and member of AIA. She loves the outdoors with the ever-changing skies and enjoys the challenges of bringing natural light into right-sized, practical, sun-inspired low-energy homes. Shannon Pendleton, CPHC, is the founder of Sanderson Sustainable Design est. 2003 which partners best in class building science with place, community advocacy, and historical context. Offering Certified Passive House design and modeling solutions for clients and teams through listening, prioritizing goals, and sharing proven techniques. Specialties include zero energy, non-toxic, pest-dust-mold free homes for multi-generational, affordable, low carbon buildings.  Experienced in custom prefabrication, reconstruction, client advocacy and team building. Keith Sharp, Emeritus Professor, ASME Fellow, PE, Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Louisville (UL), received a BS from the University of Cincinnati in 1976, MS from Colorado State University (CSU) in 1978 and ScD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1987, all in Mechanical Engineering. He was Director of the Renewable Energy Applications Laboratory at UL, and is a past chair of the Solar Energy Division of ASME. He studied stratification in solar thermal storage at CSU. Current research heating and cooling of buildings entirely by ambient sources of energy. He has published articles in Solar Energy, the Journal of Ambient Energy, the Journal of Solar Energy Engineering, the Journal of Engineering for Sustainable Buildings and Cities, the International Journal of Sustainable Energy, the Journal of Energy, the Journal of Energy Engineering, and Solar Today. He has designed and built a number of ambient-conditioned homes. His current home is entirely heated by passive solar and cooled by nighttime ventilation. He has developed software for simulating ambient-conditioned buildings that is easy to use for architects and builders during the predesign phase. Such early energy analysis helps ensure performance of the final building. Lessons Learned  1. Understand the importance of a thoughtful approach to orientation towards the sun, windows, shading, and solar reflective materials for the human health of occupants in passive solar residential buildings. 2. Analyze the design of roofs, overhangs, building shape, and additional features to ensure the envrionmetnal sustainability and safety of occupants in passive solar residential buildings. 3. Introduce the use of advanced passive solar features and tools like WUFI Passive, Energy Rating Index, HERS ratings, Sketch up, and Ambient Energy to enhance the welfare of occupants in passive solar residential buildings. 4. Articulate how the use of new passive solar products, materials, and technologies can significantly enhance the decarbonization of residential housing.
