Theatre West is throwing a party, and everyone's invited to remember when music had something to say. "The Age of Aquarius '67 to '72: The Songs of Rock N' Soul" promises 75 minutes of pure celebration, the kind where audiences leave dancing in the aisles and singing out loud. Victoria Lavan and John A. Goux have created something they call a "joyful celebration" of five years that changed everything about popular music.

The playlist reads like a greatest hits collection of an entire generation: Tina Turner, The Beatles, Aretha Franklin, Jimi Hendrix, Simon & Garfunkel, The Beach Boys. These weren't just songs but anthems that soundtracked a time when, as Lavan and Goux put it, rock and roll became "a powerful force set against the backdrop of introspection, social unrest, and military action under a burgeoning umbrella of peace and love." That's quite a lot to pack into one sentence, but then again, 1967 to 1972 was quite a lot to pack into five years.

Lavan knows her way around Theatre West, having directed award-winning shows like "So Many Stars" and holiday cabarets. Music supervisor Goux brings three decades of rock performance experience from bands across the Western United States. Together, they're presenting what they promise will be "beautiful, fun, and cool" music from a time when singers "sang from their souls and instrumentalists played like it was their last song." The production carries extra weight this year, dedicated to Theatre West band member Mara Wells, who died in July.
