While bipartisan support for a strong U.S. role in global conservation is solid, much has been lost in 2025 with the dismantling of the U.S. Agency for International Development and major disruptions to the funding of conservation organizations worldwide. The Reimagining Global Conservation Initiative is seizing this moment to redefine the U.S. role in global conservation, building on our common values, and bringing evidence and intention to a new future, reimagined together. The magnitude of recent change presents the first opportunity in generations to rethink and then rebuild the global institutions that shape foreign assistance and international conservation. But we don’t have to rebuild the system we had. The legacy system delivered important gains, yet starting fresh, we could build differently. Now is the moment to advance practical alternatives, using a shared adaptive playbook, grounded in our common values, to move from vision to implementation. This initiative is unique in channeling the commitment, inspiration, and wisdom of a broad constituent group to inform a robust new future for the U.S. role in conservation. This effort has been met with enthusiasm and is rapidly gaining momentum. We intend to meet this moment with integrity, clarity, and robust collaboration.
