The UIU Tri-State Chapter is proud to launch a cultural fundraiser in support of the Akwete Cooperative Weaving Society, a women-led initiative based in Akwete, Abia State, Nigeria, home to the centuries-old art of Akwete weaving. This intricate textile craft is not only a vibrant symbol of Igbo identity but also a living legacy passed down through generations of women artisans.

Despite its cultural significance, the tradition is at risk of fading due to lack of funding, limited training access for younger generations, and the rising costs of raw materials. The above video was made by the women of the Society to detail their needs. This is summarized below.

Through this fundraiser, we aim to

Support and sustain the Akwete Cooperative Weaving Society by helping fund equipment, supplies, and weaving materials.
Sponsor apprenticeship and training programs for young women to learn the craft and preserve this vital cultural heritage.
Provide economic opportunity for local weavers through entrepreneurship support, cooperative development, and global visibility.
