Since 2015, Caring Hands has focused on helping the indigenous (e.g., Mayan) population in Chiapas, the poorest state in Mexico. Half of the Chiapas inidigenous population reports no income and another 42% reports less than $5/day. They learn Spanish as a second language in school, but many drop out of school to support their families. Less than 1% of the students have the opportunity to go to college.

Through our service projects, Amare Caring Hands has built 8 high schools, which have impacted about 5,000 students. And thanks to your generous contributions, we have also provided scholarships and pay and operate 4 university centers, which have educated over 300 university students.

As seen in the photo, Rocelia and Lucio (huband and wife) are both recipients of the Caring Hands scholarhips and both attended one of the university centers that are funded and operated by Caring Hands. They came from one of the poorest areas in Chalam, in the Mexican state of Chiapas.

During college, Rocelia and Lucio had two young children, Jennifer and Dalia. Rocelia became pregnant with her third child, Frida, in her final year of university. While some mothers may have dropped out of school to take care of their young family, Rocelia and Lucio were determined to get an education. They brought their children to the university center and took online courses while Jennifer and Dalia slept on the floor. Rocelia and Lucio both graduated and were some of the best students in their class. Lucio interned at Carl Taylor's potato farm in Idaho. Both Rocelia and Lucio are teachers in their local communities to teach the next generation of students. Lucio also planted 500 coffee plants and opened a chicken farm. Today, in addition to teaching, Rocelia advocates on behalf of indigenous women getting an education. When they grow up, Jennifer wants to become a teacher and Dalia a nurse. They are the best students in their school.
