Black Canyon National Park & Curecanti National Recreation Area Need You Now

On July 10, 2025, two massive wildfires were burning along both rims of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park—just as the summer season reached its peak. The South Rim Fire had already scorched approximately 3,000 acres and remained 0% contained, while a second blaze continued to burn on the North Rim.

Wildland teams from multiple agencies—including the National Park Service, BLM, U.S. Forest Service, and state and county fire crews—worked tirelessly to battle gusty winds, scorching heat, and tinder-dry terrain while protecting park infrastructure, homes, roads, wildlife, and the canyon itself.

This was more than an emergency—it was an inflection point for the future of Black Canyon and Curecanti.

As the park entered its third day of closure, staff and firefighters worked around the clock to fight the fires and keep visitors and surrounding communities safe. Smoke blanketed the region, visitor centers were boarded up, trails were inaccessible, and air quality deteriorated for nearby communities.

The fires eventually became part of the park's history—but their impact did not end when the flames were extinguished. The work of restoration, recovery, rebuilding, and preparing the park for future threats continues.
