What you will be supporting in Brain Injury Solutions:

According to 2020 census data, one in thirty people in Virginia have a disability because of a brain injury. This puts the potential number of people in Brain Injury Solutions' service area with a brain injury and a disability at around 40,000, showing a clear need for services. Some causes of brain injury include traffic accidents, falls, heart attacks, strokes, sports injuries, and illness.

While many people receive good care in the hospital, most find once they are home, they lack supporting resources. This is even more true for many who already have limited means. Survivors of brain injuries often find upon returning home they must relearn how to do everyday activities such as grocery shopping, working, and using a cell phone. Even simply visiting with a friend can be a new challenge.

Fortunately, Brain Injury Solutions (BIS) is here to help turn tragedy into hope! Not only is BIS here to fill the huge need of support during a challenging time, BIS provides this support free of charge for survivors of brain injury and their families.

Comprehensive case management is designed to meet the unique needs of individuals living with the challenges of acquired brain injury. Clients’ needs vary depending on the extent of the damage sustained, though typically include difficulties with concentration, attention, speech, memory, uneven gait, emotional lability, and loss of initiative. Case Managers focus on assisting clients with medical services, individual and family counseling, cognitive retraining, recreational activities, and positive behavioral training.

BIS is the only organization that provides FREE case management services to survivors of brain injury in Southwest Virginia. Long term case management services provided by BIS saves valuable resources as it allows clients to live as independently and productively as possible, thus removing clients from public and correctional caseloads. More than 60% of our consumers are able to work, attend school, or participate in vocational training.

BIS is able to provide services, which each year costs $3,500 a person, for free thanks to generous support from donors, organizations, foundations, businesses, local governments, and the state.
