💙 Why It Matters

Life can change in the BLINK of an Eye. In 2015 Archer Senft, a Baltimore native, then a 17 year old rising Junior at McDonogh School, 6'4" lacrosse player and artist and brother to 4 other siblings, was on family summer vacation at the beach when he joyfully dove into a big ocean wave and into an unknown sandbar. He shattered his neck. He was rendered quadriplegic, paralyzed from the neck down instantly, C2-C4 ASIA complete. In the BLINK of an Eye, Archer's life and the Senft family's life was changed forever. There are almost 18,000 other SCI Families in the US whose lives are also changed in the BLINK of an Eye. Against all medical odds, Archer lived. Why? Because of community support, unwavering advocacy, a belief in what is possible, and collective prayers from those of many different faiths. In gratitude for Archer's life and human capacity to #BeginAgain, Archer's Mom, Louise Phipps Senft, wanted to pay it forward for other families facing spinal cord injury (SCI) and the trauma experience that turns a family upside down. SCI is usually longterm and often forever, and the needs are overwhelming and critical. Few medical professionals in the US have life experience or SCI expertise—and there’s no roadmap or immediate support for families.

That’s where BLINK of an Eye® steps in.

We are the only organization in the nation providing 1:1 bedside trauma support—for SCI Families, by SCI Families starting in the ICU. Through our SCI Navigator Program, our bedside rapid-response HEAL Team and SCI Navigators (all of whom have SCI lived experience), supported by our multidisciplinary Wrap-Around Team and SCI Medical Expert Panel, journey alongside SCI families in crisis, 24/7 for 365 days beginning in the first hours and days of injury. We offer relational, emotional, mental health and transformative support when it matters most. We bring hope and best SCI practices, knowledge of SCI science and FDA trials as well as love, understanding, and SCI practical tips and resources for families to empower them to navigate though their first year of crisis.

Since 2022, BLINK has supported more than 60 families across the US, offering hope, our SCI lived experience expertise, and a compassionate community that understands and has connections to best resources and partnerships with top SCI rehab facilities in the country. All of our SCI Navigators are also trained as neutral relational mediators and in trauma informed intervention as they guide and educate newly injured SCI families. BLINK of an Eye knows the Spinal Cord Injury trauma journey. And you, our community, are part of the trauma healing.
