A Global Exchange Rooted in Care, Wisdom, and Survival

Black women and their infants continue to face some of the most severe maternal health outcomes in the United States and across the globe. Changing these realities requires more than awareness. It requires investing in the care models that are already saving lives.

For more than two decades, communities in Northern Uganda have lived through the lasting effects of civil war and displacement. In the midst of that history, local midwives and healers cultivated systems of care rooted in tradition, cultural knowledge, and community responsibility. Through a 17-year collaboration with Mother Health International, this work has grown into a model of midwifery that integrates indigenous healing, trauma-informed practice, and community-centered care. Nearly 20,000 mothers and babies have been served at the birth center, and not a single mother has been lost.

The Black Midwifery Fellowship was created to bring Black midwives and student midwives into direct relationship with this life-saving model of care. This fellowship is built on exchange, connection, and the belief that strengthening Black midwives strengthens entire communities. Participants engage in a year-long curriculum and immersive learning experience at the birth center, where they attend prenatal visits, births, postpartum care, and outreach programs while sharing their own knowledge and skills. When they return home, fellows continue integrating what they have learned into their practices and communities, expanding the reach of this work far beyond one location.
