Sumiyyah Franklin's Story

I have known since I was 12 years old that my life’s work would be caring for mothers, parents, and their babies. Long before birth work was widely recognized in our communities, I began walking the path of traditional midwifery, guided by a deep knowing that our families deserve care rooted in dignity, wisdom, and sovereignty.

My journey has taken me across the globe, learning from elders, healers, and traditional practitioners who entrusted me with knowledge that has sustained our people for generations. With their blessings, I committed not only to practice this work, but to share it and remain a traditional sovereign midwife.

As the founder of Sumi’s Touch, I have spent years mentoring, teaching, and supporting families and birth workers. Thousands of BIPOC people have received this knowledge, and as we approach ten years of Sumi’s Touch, I feel called to expand this work even further by helping usher more traditional BIPOC midwives into the world.

If this vision resonates with you, I invite you to support this campaign and share it with your community. Your support helps make this gathering possible and helps grow the future of traditional birth work.

Together, we are protecting wisdom, nurturing community, and building the future our families deserve.
