We'll open with a restorative 20-minute Serenity Breathing and Smiling Bhāvanā meditation to calm the body and quiet the mind. Vince will then introduce the RAFT to Freedom framework — a secular, Buddhist-informed approach that weaves early dharma together with modern neuroscience and psychology — and explore the movement most of us were never taught: learning to feel the freedom that appears when craving loosens its grip. We're quick to notice the storm and nearly blind to the clear water between; this is the art of recognising when the coast is clear.

The four movements: Recognise the pain · Abandon the craving · Feel the resulting freedom · Train the body-mind.

Looking ahead: if you've been seeking a structured path to everyday well-being, today is a perfect introduction before a fresh cycle of the free 66-chapter programme begins on Tuesday 1 September 2026 — with weekly meetings on Tuesdays (8pm UK) and Sundays (6pm UK). No previous Buddhist experience needed — just a caringly curious mind. All welcome.

What is the Academy?

The Academy has invited some of the leading teachers in the field of Buddhist recovery. On the first Sunday of every month for an hour each teacher will explore the sharp edges of suffering through the lens of the Buddhist Teachings.

The Academy brings together teachers from different Buddhist lineages and approaches. Themes like addiction, alcoholism, depression, stinking thinking and compulsive behaviors will be explored.

During this event we will meditate, listen to the teaching, then have time for a Q & A at the end.
