Where It All Began—And Why We’re Asking for Your Help

Nearly two years ago, Shelter House (Artemis House) opened their doors to us and gave us their trust. They welcomed Beyond the Blueprint to lead DIY workshops and visual-led support groups for survivors in their care. That early trust helped shape who we are today.

Now, we return to where it all began—to create a transformation that will echo long after paint dries and furniture is placed.

This Shelter Makeover is a full-circle moment—rooted in gratitude, growth, and deep purpose.

Just six months ago, we completed our inaugural Shelter Makeover at the City of Alexandria’s Community Shelter (ACS) for Carpenter’s Shelter. The redesigned spaces have since touched the lives of more than 100 individuals—survivors, and the staff who serve them—proving what’s possible when care, intention, and healing are designed into everyday environments.

Because trauma-informed design isn’t just about beauty—it’s about rebuilding a sense of safety, identity, and possibility.

It’s about helping survivors feel grounded, regain their voice, and begin to see themselves not through the lens of their past, but through the strength of their future.

It’s about giving children space to rest, to play, and to feel safe enough to just be kids again—because when a child’s environment supports their healing, it shapes how they grow, how they connect, and how they begin to trust the world around them.

It’s about helping shelter staff recharge so they can keep showing up, with empathy and endurance, for those who rely on them most.

Now, it’s Artemis House’s turn.
