A healthy birth isn’t a solitary event that impacts a single family! It affects the health of an entire community!

When a mother has an uncomplicated birth for a healthy, full-term baby, a family is able to go home from the hospital together, to avoid lengthy hospital stays, and be less likely to experience short-and long-term health complications that create emotional and financial stress. Parents are able to participate more fully in the workforce with fewer absences, and their child is less likely to have learning delays, leading to greater potential for educational and work success as they grow. In short, a whole community benefits.

BirthWell Partners believes that investing in the care of under-resourced pregnant people is key to breaking the cycle of poverty. BirthWell’s Community Doulas work with families individually to provide culturally responsive support throughout pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. Their work goes beyond traditional care by offering emotional support, health education, and advocacy, helping families navigate complex healthcare systems and access essential resources.

When people are supported by doulas, they are less likely to give birth too soon (preterm birth) or to give birth to a baby that's too small (low birth weight), and they are less likely to have a surgical birth (c-section).
