Your gift directly benefits students of WBHS in Oakland County, Michigan.

Winners receive funds that help them to pursue higher education this fall at a learning institute within Michigan. These Seniors are chosen and celebrated based on their commitment to enriching our community, their ambitious career goals, and their outstanding achievements. Scholarship winners are honored at a special Optimist Club of West Bloomfield breakfast ceremony, as well as the annual Michigan Week Awards Breakfast 🏆 Because of you, these scholarship recipients are enabled to more fully immerse themselves in their education experience. With less financial burden and more support, they have a greater capacity to keep giving back to the community and our great State.

The 2024 Scholarships have been awarded; however, you can show your support EARLY with a donation to the 2025 fund!

In 2024, $3386 was raised via our campaign platform, and the remaining $1614 was gifted by the Mellen family and members of the Optimist Club of West Bloomfield.

About Bob Mellen

The "Be Like Bob" Scholarship is awarded in memory of Robert “Bob” Mellen, a longtime member of the WB Optimists since 1982. Bob was a founding partner in the accounting firm of Mellen, Smith & Pivoz.

Bob embodied the Optimist mission through his positive attitude, kind heart, and selflessness in service to others. He was a strong believer in public and higher education. Bob felt that public education is the foundation of our democracy, and that "the character of our youth determines the strength of our future."

Mr. Mellen was a quiet and caring mentor to many. He and his wife (of 54 years!) shared their home with the Optimists for the annual Holiday Happiness gift wrapping party. This created an atmosphere of fellowship and goodwill, all while serving the youth and families in our community.

This scholarship is endowed in Bob's memory. His shining spirit will forever be treasured and remembered by the WB Optimist Club.

West Bloomfield Optimists

The Optimist Club of West Bloomfield is one of nearly 3,000 clubs that makes up Optimist International. We operate a certified 501(c)(3) non-profit organization serving the residents of West Bloomfield, Michigan and its surrounding areas. Optimists raise funds to offer the youth in our community a chance to be recognized, win scholarships, learn how to be upstanding community citizens, and to respect law.

Optimists bring out the best in our youth, our communities, and ourselves.

All donations to our 501(c)(3) foundation are tax deductible.
