Event description: Bike the Pike is a 18-mile bicycle ride beginning in West Chester, Pennsylvania and ending at The Yard Pub in Havertown, Pennsylvania. The bike ride will begin at 12 PM at Marshall Square Park. Each year T-Shirts are made to spread awareness and all proceeds go to the KCNT1 Foundation. At the finish line, The Yard Pub has wristbands for drinks, and a DJ from 1-4 PM. Bike the Pike then has 50/50 and raffle baskets to raise money to donate towards the KCNT1 Epilepsy Foundation. History of Bike the Pike :

Bike the Pike was started by Tyler Higgins, brother of Dylan, while recovering from a shoulder injury due to football. Tyler spent a lot of time on his stationary bike and came up with the idea to bike from his house in Havertown, Pennsylvania to West Chester University before the first day of school his senior year. The main route between West Chester and Havertown is West Chester Pike and is separated by a distance of roughly 18 miles. He decided to make T-Shirts for the event and called it Bike the Pike. In 2018, he biked solo as a fun challenge to bring friends together to kick off the school year. The following year, Tyler moved to Florida so his brother Dylan carried on the tradition and biked by himself as he also attended West Chester University.

In 2020, Tyler moved back home and slowly began to grow the event in size. They originally had 6 bikers and rode from Havertown to West Chester. They successfully raised a few hundred dollars until they had a real cause to ride for, besides just the fun challenge of the bike ride.

By 2021, the brothers graduated from West Chester University and they were aware that their cousin Lauren’s daughter, Leighanne, had been battling with a drug-resistant form of epilepsy as the result of a gene mutation in the KCNT1 gene. They decided to use the event, which had been growing interest amongst our friends, to raise money and donate to the KCNT1 Epilepsy Foundation, an organization focused on medical research and support for the families affected by this gene. They now had a new motivation and vision for Bike The Pikeand decided to start the bike ride in West Chester and end in Havertown at the Yard Pub to gain interest of more cyclists. Numbers jumped from 6 to 20 cyclists. The fundraising options grew with the inclusion raffles and baskets donated by friends and family. All together they raised over $2,000 which was donated to the KCNT1 foundation.

With a new purpose of Bike the Pike they began to take more pride in our name and our event and to spread the word even more. In 2022 the event took another jump and doubled from 20 cyclists to 40 including the first group of females to ride! Once again, they celebrated the at the finish line --at the Yard Pub -- and with more people interested and participating, raising a healthy $6,700.

The following two years the event attracted over 40+ cyclists to the ride on the pike. They offered additional merchandise for purchase with proceeds going towards the KCNT1 Epilepsy Foundation. The duo is looking forward to another successful year!

The KCNT1 Epilepsy Foundation is dedicated to finding treatments (and hopefully a cure) for pediatric epilepsy caused by a mutation in the KCNT1 gene. It can cause seizures that do not respond to traditional anti-seizure medications and can take away a child's ability to walk, talk or ride a bike. We aim to locate every patient and researcher in the world and bring them together in a collaborative manner to develop new treatments for this devastating pediatric epilepsy.
