A few weeks ago, HSCC assisted with a significant hoarding and neglect case in northern Vermont involving a group of under-socialized German Shepherds. The dogs had been kept in makeshift outdoor shelters and exposed to extreme weather, with limited veterinary care and minimal positive human interaction.

One of those dogs is 2-year-old Bjorn.

Bjorn is a sensitive, thoughtful dog who understandably takes time to warm up to new people. Having missed out on socialization and stability as a puppy, he can be cautious at first. But once he feels safe, his sweet and happy personality really comes through. He enjoys connection and clearly wants to bond — he just needs patience and consistency.

In addition to his behavioral needs, Bjorn has a serious medical condition. He has a long-standing wound on his left wrist that never fully healed. X-rays show that the infection has likely spread from the soft tissue into the bone. Bone infections are difficult to treat and typically require surgery along with a prolonged course of antibiotics.

Over time, the chronic infection and inflammation have likely damaged the structures of his wrist joint. The joint appears to have fused, which explains the stiffness and limited movement in his leg and the ongoing discomfort he experiences.

Given the severity and duration of the condition, our veterinary team and consulting specialist have recommended amputation as the most humane option. Removing the leg will eliminate the source of chronic pain and allow Bjorn to move forward more comfortably. However, this surgery is expensive, and HSCC will need to pay $3,444 for the procedure and follow-up care.

After surgery, he will need several weeks of recovery and support as he adjusts. The good news is that most dogs adapt very well to life on three legs and go on to live active, comfortable lives.
