The Black and Gold Scholarship Ball is the signature fundraising event for the G.W.C. Brown Legacy Education Fund. It has existed in various iterations for approximately 50 years. Initially, it was a fundraiser for Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Alpha Phi Lambda Chapter. As the fraternity grew, we recognized the need for a non-profit arm to address our growing commitment to the under-served communities of Norfolk and Virginia Beach.

Over the last 10 years, we have supported 20 young men with scholarships to institutions of higher learning. We have expanded our reach to include mentorship programs and life opportunities to support the socioeconomic development of young men within our community.

In 2017, we purchased a historic building in the Park Place Business district. We went through extensive renovations to bring the building up to code, and create a framework for the Alpha Leadership & Education Center. The scholarship ball has expanded to provide funds for academic equipment as well as the tools to reach greater audiences.

We are focused on three things in 2022: Scholarships, enrichment programs for middle and high school students, and socioeconomic development for young men.
