Blue Earth Defense (BED) is an international, volunteer-led confederation of grassroots organizations, communities, and activists committed to defending the Earth through ecological justice, solidarity, and community-led action. Founded on April 1, 2024, BED brings together members across three continents who share a biocentric perspective—recognizing that humans are part of nature and that the well-being of people is inseparable from the health of the natural world.

BED works to address the root causes of ecological destruction by supporting local communities in protecting their lands, waters, and biodiversity while promoting alternatives to extractive and destructive systems. Guided by the principles of autonomy, mutual aid, cooperation, direct action, and respect for Indigenous knowledge and women's leadership, BED strengthens grassroots movements through education, capacity building, and international solidarity.

The organization envisions a world where biodiversity thrives, communities live in harmony with nature, and collective action replaces systems of domination with cooperation, justice, and care for all forms of life.

Campaigns and Programs

Since its establishment, Blue Earth Defense (BED) has supported and coordinated campaigns that address emerging threats to biodiversity, ecological integrity, and community rights. Over the past year, the organization has expanded its work on issues related to Deep Sea Mining (DSM), Seabed Quarrying, and Offshore Mining, recognizing the significant risks these industries pose to marine ecosystems, coastal communities, and fisheries.

BED also continues to stand in solidarity with grassroots movements resisting destructive large-scale renewable energy and extractive development projects in the Philippines. In addition, BED actively supports campaigns opposing environmentally harmful infrastructure projects, including the development of sanitary landfill facilities in communities where there are significant concerns regarding ecological impacts, public health, and the rights of affected residents. While recognizing the urgent need to address the climate crisis, BED promotes community-led, biodiversity-centered solutions that respect Indigenous Peoples' rights and local communities, rather than approaches that prioritize industrial expansion under the banner of "green" development.

As global demand for critical minerals accelerates, BED is developing educational resources and community awareness initiatives on the PAX Silica agreement—a United States-led initiative intended to strengthen supply chains for artificial intelligence (AI), renewable energy technologies, and semiconductor manufacturing. BED is currently preparing a community primer and facilitating public education and awareness activities to help communities better understand the environmental, social, and economic implications of expanding critical mineral extraction and related industrial development.

To strengthen long-term solidarity with frontline communities, Blue Earth Defense Philippines (BED Ph) is also developing a Social Enterprise Program that aims to provide sustainable support to anti-mining and environmental defense communities across the Philippines. The initiative seeks to create community-based livelihood opportunities and ethical fundraising mechanisms that help sustain local organizing, environmental protection efforts, and community resilience while reducing dependence on external funding.

Through Communities that Protect and Resist (CPR), a grassroots collective that advances community organizing, ecological justice, and popular education. The group offers Leading Communities of Resistance, a free educational course designed for community leaders, organizers, youth, and environmental defenders. The course provides participants with practical knowledge and organizing skills to strengthen community resilience, defend their territories, and build collective action rooted in solidarity, self-determination, and ecological stewardship.

Through public education, community organizing, policy engagement, international solidarity, and community-led economic initiatives, BED works alongside communities and partner organizations to ensure that environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, and community self-determination remain at the center of decisions affecting the future of people and the planet.
