History & Legacy

Established in 1988, the Boyz 'n the Hood Golf Tournament has a proud legacy of bringing black men together. Notably inspired by a picnic organized by the Dakota County Society of Black Women for African American families who lived in Dakota County. The tournament was originally played at Cleary Lake Executive 9-Hole Golf Course in Prior Lake MN and was initially exclusive to Dakota County area golfers. Founding participants included Curtis Marks, Al Ware, Tony Pankey, John Robinson, Warren Simpson, Melvin Henderson, Greg Coleman, Skip Simmons, Gus Grainger, and Clifford Collins.

In 1992 the tournament expanded to include golfers from across the metro area, reflecting its commitment to fostering a vibrant and inclusive golf culture. Now in its 37^th year, it continues to be a premier event that unites golfers in camaraderie and competition while making a lasting community impact. Our mission is to foster growth, learning, and opportunities for all African Americans.

This year, we proudly partner with Ticket for Kids and the National Basketball Retired Players Association to provide underserved youth with enriching experiences that inspire hope and opportunity.
