The Maui Lahaina disastrous fires left an extreme housing crisis on our island. We have farmland and want to accommodate more displaced Maui residents in tents and trailers. The only thing stopping us is expanding our off-grid water storage and solar power to provide water and energy to what we will call a “Tiny Home Park”.

Now is the opportune time because our local government, which previously opposed all trailers and tiny homes, is finally supporting alternative housing, forced by the Lahaina fires and extreme housing crunch. Many guest house and garage unit renters had to leave to accommodate the families who lost their homes in the fire. The fire victims were forced to move in with their relatives, and many tenants generously gave up their rentals to help.

There are zero low-cost places to rent now on Maui. The loss of revenue from the COVID shutdown of all tourism (our only economy) and the losses from the fire have created an impossible living situation for the simple working class and fixed-income elders here. One of the saddest outcomes has been that those who lost their loved ones, homes, and businesses in the fire are now having to surrender their pets to the pound due to rental landlords not allowing them. We can accommodate pets because we are a farm.

Besides increasing water storage, we need a less precarious 25 K-watt well-pumping generator. We need to pray over ours every time we start it because it is 18+ years old. We also need to build a second solar power plant to provide electricity for more people. We already have nine residents in tents and trailers on our existing off-grid power and water, and we cannot add more, not due to lack of space but due to utilities.
