The Bronx is Blooming is a grassroots nonprofit focused on building community, enhancing environmental health, and increasing youth employment in Bronx neighborhoods facing some of New York City's greatest environmental and public health challenges. Our mission is to grow and support a culture of environmental stewardship in The Bronx, helping local residents become protectors of their natural resources and drivers of positive change.

Your support helps us operate our two core programs, which combine education and direct action to increase environmental knowledge and stewardship capacity, while revitalizing Bronx parks and green spaces.

Program for Leaders Advancing their Community’s Environment (PLACE):

PLACE employs local youth to lead volunteer groups in environmental restoration projects, providing leadership training, horticultural skills, and exposure to higher education.
Our unique model flips the typical mentorship structure by empowering Bronx college students to mentor high school students, who then lead volunteer efforts. This approach helps young people become confident, knowledgeable leaders in their own communities.
Dedicated PLACE Students may continue their growth as Bridge Interns, gaining hands-on experience in maintaining green infrastructure, event planning, community outreach, and volunteer management. This program helps build pathways to green jobs for Bronx youth.

Grow, Revitalize, Educate, Engage, Nurture (GREEN):

GREEN engages schools, civic groups, and volunteers in hands-on environmental workshops, fostering awareness of local ecology while actively restoring Bronx park ecosystems.
Participants learn how to steward trees, remove invasive species, and plant native vegetation, helping to mitigate poor air quality, reduce the urban heat island effect, and create healthy habitats and welcoming spaces for all residents.

Since 2011, we have:

Engaged 24,000+ volunteers in park revitalization projects in more than 20 community parks and green spaces in The Bronx.
Provided seasonal employment, leadership training, and professional development for 500+ Bronx high school and college students.
Planted over 22,000 native plants, creating pockets of healthy habitat for wildlife including pollinators including 800 trees.
Planted 800+ native trees and stewarded 20,000+ trees to help grow healthy tree canopy that can absorb pollutants and reduce temperatures in our neighborhoods.
