Since 1995, the Buddy Walk® has been the premier advocacy event for Down syndrome in the United States. It is also the world’s most widely recognized public awareness program for the Down syndrome community.
Here in Maine, our Buddy Walk is a fundraising event, a festival, and a family reunion all rolled into one! You'll see friends, families, community members all supporting and celebrating Mainers with Down syndrome. There will be music, face-painting, balloon animals, lawn games, raffles and more! Registration includes all of this, as well as lunch and a t-shirt. You must register online by October 8 to be guaranteed this year's t-shirt in your preferred size.
We encourage you to form a team with family and friends! A team is simply 2 or more people who register and choose a team name! Teams who raise at least $300, or who register at least 15 people by October 8 will earn team shirts in the secret color of the year with your team name on the back shoulders. Teams who raise $1000 or more by October 22 will earn an awareness banner with their loved one's photo on it. This banner is the property of MDSN and will be displayed beginning at next year's walk. Additionally, on Buddy Walk day, there will be prizes given for the team who has raised the most money, the team with the most members present, the team with the best spirit, and the team with the person who traveled the furthest to join us!
It's an afternoon of family fun and connection unlike any other you'll experience! We can't wait to see you all!
A little more about us and what we do....
Maine Down Syndrome Network is an all-volunteer run 501c3 nonprofit who's mission is to provide support, education, and advocacy to Mainers with Down syndrome, their families and their communities. We do this in many ways. Of course, our annual Buddy Walks, which are not only our major source of funding, but the largest advocacy and awareness events for Down syndrome in Maine. We also have a wonderful Outreach team, who connect with newly diagnosed families, matching them with the support they seek, as well as gifting them with a New Baby Bag, full of resources and gifts. Our newest endeavor, Puberty Packs is similar, full of resources and gifts for our members when they get to that age. As we come back from pandemic restrictions and hestitations, we look forward to resuming Mom's Night outs, D.A.D.S events, family social events and our Conference for Mainers with Down syndrome, their parents, siblings, and educators. Look for more information on these by following us on Facebook, or on our website at www.dsmaine.org. If you're interested in helping us do these things and more, please email [email protected].
