Every Step Forward Begins with Hope
September is Limb-Girdle Muscular Dystrophy (LGMD) Awareness Month, and for our family, it's more than a date on the calendar, it's an opportunity to bring hope to a community that has waited far too long for answers.
In 2016, our daughter, Brooklyn, was diagnosed with LGMD2A (Calpainopathy), a rare, progressive form of muscular dystrophy. At just 9 years old, our family's world changed overnight. Since then, we've watched this disease gradually take away things many people never think twice about: running, climbing stairs, getting up from the floor, lifting her arms above her shoulders, and many other everyday tasks. Yet, if you know Brooklyn, you know that LGMD has never defined her. Today, she's a sophomore at Baylor University studying Public Health, an advocate for the rare disease community, and someone who continues to inspire us with her determination, resilience, and unwavering hope.
Our journey has introduced us to an incredible community of families, researchers, clinicians, and advocates who all share one goal: changing the future for people living with LGMD. That's why we support Coalition to Cure Calpain 3 (C3). C3 is a nonprofit organization dedicated exclusively to advancing research for LGMD2A (Calpainopathy). Through research funding, patient registries, scientific collaboration, advocacy, and education, C3 is helping move potential treatments closer to reality. Thanks to organizations like C3 and the dedication of researchers around the world, there is more hope today than there has ever been before.
This fundraiser isn't just about Brooklyn. It's about every child, teenager, and adult living with Calpainopathy. It's about parents searching for answers. It's about researchers working tirelessly toward new treatments. It's about believing that the future can look different than the past.
Double Your Impact: Thanks to the generosity of SALT Service Co., every dollar donated throughout the month of September will be matched dollar-for-dollar, up to $10,000. Our goal is to raise $20,000 from our community, which combined with SALT's matching gift, has the potential to provide up to $30,000 to advance research and accelerate progress toward treatments for LGMD2A.
