The Carehouse is a lifeline for individuals experiencing homelessness who are too sick to recover on the streets but not sick enough to remain in the hospital. As Kansas City’s only standalone medical respite facility, it fills a critical gap in care.

When patients leave the hospital without a safe place to recover, their health often declines, leading to complications and readmissions. The Carehouse changes that story. Here, patients have a private room, consistent medical care, and a team that supports both their health and their future.

Each patient receives weekly care from licensed providers and access to services tailored to their needs, including wound care, behavioral health, and physical therapy. At the same time, case managers work to help patients secure housing, access benefits, and rebuild stability. Because of this approach, half of all Carehouse patients do not return to the streets after discharge.

We have the opportunity to expand this impact. Our capital campaign will fund the purchase and renovation of the Carehouse building, allowing us to open all 39 rooms and serve more patients year-round. In partnership with the City of Kansas City, this will also create the city’s first low-barrier, year-round shelter for those experiencing homelessness.
