A message from Chatham County Council on Aging Executive Director Dennis Streets:

Dear Friends,

This is my last official appeal as director of the Chatham County Council on Aging. As you may have heard, I am retiring effective February 1, 2022.

February is traditionally “We Love Seniors” month here in Chatham County. By then, I hope I can look back on this year-end appeal and see that we reached a new goal to exceed last year’s achievement of $25,000. With your support and the support of others who know the importance of our work, we can make this hope a reality.

That will be a true expression that our community loves its seniors.

In our upcoming newsletter, I write of how the late Rev. Juanita Milliken, at age 102, instructed me on my first day at the Council on Aging to “do right by my seniors.” That message has inspired me every day to do my absolute best on behalf of Chatham seniors and their families. I see the same commitment from all here at the Council—staff and volunteers.

When I started at the Council on May 1, 2014, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I knew of our wonderful history of service—founded as a nonprofit organization on July 8, 1974. Having lived in Chatham for many years, I had already felt our collaborative, caring, and giving spirit as a community. What I have experienced over the past 7 1/2 years of service at the COA has been phenomenal!

I have witnessed firsthand the critical importance of our mission—keeping Chatham’s growing number of seniors healthy, active, and living safely at home, as well as supporting family caregivers. Our many services and programs are driven by the needs and interests of seniors.

Through your association with the Council, I hope you have seen the same love I have felt and experienced each day.

This love is evident in the intangibles—connection, comfort, care, physical and emotional nourishment, friendship, security, community, dedication, and advocacy—all geared toward assuring the overall well-being of Chatham County seniors and their families.

While I welcome best wishes as I leave my position with the Council, what will truly warm my spirit is knowing your support of our work remains strong. It is only through your support that we can continue to "do right by our seniors."
