Celebrating Developmental Disability Awareness Month: Embracing Inclusion and Empowerment

March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month (DDAM)—a time to celebrate the strengths, talents, and contributions of individuals with developmental disabilities. At Community Support Network (CSN), we empower adults with disabilities through meaningful employment, community engagement, and enriching experiences. Throughout the month, we will be sharing stories from the people we serve—stories of resilience, growth, and achievement. From finding meaningful employment to building social connections, these stories highlight the incredible potential within every individual and remind us why our mission matters.

While DDAM is about celebrating progress, it’s also a reminder that access to essential services is not guaranteed. Many of the individuals we support rely on Medicaid-funded services to live, work, and thrive in their communities. Potential changes to Medicaid could put these critical supports at risk, making community advocacy and support more important than ever.

According to KFF’s Medicaid in Wisconsin factsheet, 18% of Wisconsin’s population—approximately 1.3 million people—receives services through Medicaid? For many, these services are lifelines, covering the cost of essential needs like:

✅ Caregivers

✅ Wheelchairs and communication devices

✅ Medical visits and therapies

✅ Food and other daily necessities

Cuts to Medicaid would not only jeopardize the health and independence of these 1.3 million individuals—it would also profoundly impact families, caregivers, and service providers who play a critical role in supporting their well-being.
