The Wellington Humane Society Serving Sumner County, KS is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to rescuing, caring for, and adopting out homeless dogs and cats into loving, responsible forever homes. We operate on donations and rely on many volunteer staff to serve the needs of homeless animals in our community.

We are a no-kill animal shelter. That means that we work diligently to treat, heal, and work with animals to be able to find safe and quality homes in our community. We educate and offer programs to reduce the animal population in our community such as the low-cost spay/neuter program. To be a no-kill shelter, we maintain a 90% save rate. That means euthanasia is only used as a last resort when an animal is suffering from terminal medical or behavioral conditions. At a no-kill shelter, an end-of-life decision for a pet is an act of mercy rather than one for convenience or lack of space. We have a commitment to lifesaving practices and treating each animal with respect.

The Wellington Humane Society Trap Neuter Release (TNR) program ensures neighborhood/feral cats are fixed, and each cat is given a Rabies and FVRCP vaccination. All cats are also given an ear tip, which is the universal sign that the cat has been fixed. Ear tips are given while under anesthesia so the cats do not feel anything. This makes it easy to identify which cats have already been fixed so they can be released if caught in the trap.

By supporting TNR efforts in your community, you are also helping decrease the over pet population, especially with community cats and decrease the amount of fighting, spraying, and other unwanted behaviors that result from an increase of unfixed male cats. There are also, overtime, less unvaccinated cats roaming which in turn helps decrease rabies outbreaks, decreases the spread of diseases, and provides herd immunity. Studies have also shown that consistent TNR efforts result in less animals ending up in the shelter, which means less money spent and less resources used that could have otherwise been spent on sick/injured animals that really need it.

In order to continue to make a difference for not only the cats but the citizens in Caldwell, donations are being accepted to help cover the cost of surgery. Each cat cost $50 (which includes the vaccinations and ear tip listed above). Any donation amount can make a difference! The Wellington Humane Society is tracking all donations and funds will be used specifically for Caldwell cats. Citizens utilizing the Wellington Humane Society TNR program are responsible for trapping cats in live traps and transporting to/from the Wellington Humane Society. Volunteers willing to help trap and transport are always appreciated!

Updates will be provided at each surgery date (typically held once a month as funding is available). Surgeries paid for by these funds will be done using a Wellington Humane Society contracted licensed veterinarian and will be at the Wellington Humane Society facility.
