Story

Join the Party and Help the Habre!

Carolyn is a hero for red pandas. She is behind the widely popular Carson the Red Panda Instagram account  — Carson is a delightful red panda at Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, WA — and is an incredible advocate for red panda conservation.

Join Red Panda Network (RPN) in celebrating the birthdays of these heroes (Carolyn's birthday is May 29th and Carson's is July 1st) by starting a fundraiser and making a donation! Your gift will support solar panels and solar-powered lights for the Himalayan Habre Center, a resource and education center in Nepal, that RPN opened on Earth Day 2023.

Why is this campaign important? Because red pandas are in trouble.

The global red panda population has declined by 50% in 20 years. There are less than 10,000 wild red pandas and as few as 2,500 remain in the wild.

Poverty in Nepal is the problem behind the habitat loss that's threatening the red panda's survival. Local people are often smallholder farmers with insufficient access to sustainable livelihood opportunities, resulting in forest dependence, depleting resources, and reduced forest quality.

We built the Himalayan Habre Center (or Habre Center) to alleviate local poverty and ensure a sustainable future for people and red pandas. The Habre Center is the first of its kind: an education and resource hub for red panda conservation and sustainable livelihoods.

Located in a community-managed forest near Deurali, a mountain village in eastern Nepal’s Taplejung district, the Habre Center is where local people can develop skills like sustainable energy use and construction, organic farming, handicraft production, sustainable herding, bio-briquette production, nature guide, and ecotrip leadership, rainwater harvesting, water conservation, nursery, and homestay management.

"Endless thanks to all of our friends who helped Carson and me support Red Panda Network and conservation. Together we can help protect and save these incredible animals! Carson and I would love donations for our birthday fundraiser, and we would love it if red panda-loving people would start a fundraiser. Lots of love from Carson and Carolyn!"
