Story
Community Arts Depot addresses the critical need for artwork storage and access focused on Skid Row neighborhood members and residents. We see adequate and equitable accessibility of an artwork storage as an inseparable part of the fundamental human right of accessibility of arts and culture, essential to both individual and collective arts and cultural work everywhere.
Community Arts Depot aligns itself with grassroots groups and initiatives that center community control, social justice, a critical pushback on racial capitalism, and focus on advocating for dignified universal access to all basic human needs (housing, food, education, community spaces, as well as arts and culture).
We have partnered with the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center (JACCC) and Sustainable Little Tokyo (SLT), and moved into a room at JACCC this past June 2022, which cut our monthly rent costs nearly in half! This also allows us to be very close to the Skid Row neighborhood, picking up and dropping off artwork to the storage space at regular times (currently 2-3 times a month). Lastly, we also store some collaborative artwork from community events and projects as part of preserving the visual end of Skid row's arts and cultural footprint (see photo of pieces from previous Festivals for All Skid row Artists below).
Breakdown of costs for two years:
Rent: $200/mo x 24 months = $4,800
Additional costs: we will set aside $50-$100/mo for recurring materials needs for project and for artists / rainy day fund = $1,200-$2400
Please consider making a recurring monthly or quarterly contribution.
Your help us keep filling this essential and critical need and strengthen the project.
