Since launching in April of 2023, the Connor James Smith Patient Assistance Grant has awarded 23 grants totaling over $58,000. These grants have covered costs including life changing medications, travel for expert medical care, mobility aids, therapy equipment, and adaptive play equipment.

For families impacted by SCN8A, medical expenses - along with adaptive toys, clothing, mobility equipment, transportation, and housing - can create significant financial burden. The goal of the Connor James Smith Patient Assistance Grant is to bring families joy and foster a spirit of inclusivity during difficult times.

The Connor James Smith Patient Assistance Grant offers SCN8A families all over the world an opportunity to apply for monetary support with minimal barriers. Families complete one simple application and decisions are made with respect for the urgency of each request. Grant requests are often outside the scope of what insurance can cover, but Connor's family and The Cute Syndrome Foundation understand that fulfilling these wishes improves quality of life for both the SCN8A warrior and their family.

About Connor: Connor James Smith, Connorman, was a real-life superhero spreading joy and smiles everywhere he went. As one of the original diagnosed SCN8A cases, he faced the toughest battles our children go through, but he overcame them with an immense passion for Christmas lights, music, going to the beach, and hiking and running while in his wheelchair. Connor passed away at age 12 from respiratory failure and seizures, but now his joy for life will live on by supporting the SCN8A community in chasing their dreams for a life well lived and loved!
