ABOUT

The AIA Miami Design Awards are intended to encourage excellence in architecture, elevate public consciousness of good design, and recognize those architects whose work enriches our built environment.

Projects will be reviewed with the AIA Framework for Design Excellence; how the project betters the community and environment in which it resides.

All entries must be architectural projects designed by licensed architects who are AIA members in any chapter within the state of Florida. Projects may be located anywhere in the world and built projects must have been completed by January 1, 2024. The RIVA Prize is open to all AIA Florida members.

Framework for Design Excellence - The architect's call to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public has a new and broader meaning amid challenges such as increasing climate extremes and social inequity. Architects everywhere must recognize that our profession can harness the power of design to contribute to solutions addressing the most significant needs of our time. Every project can be used as a platform for addressing big problems and providing creative solutions. Every line drawn should be a source of good in the world.

The Framework for Design Excellence represents the defining principles of good design in the 21st century. Comprised of 10 principles and accompanied by searching questions, the Framework seeks to inform progress toward a zero-carbon, equitable, resilient, and healthy built environment. These are to be thoughtfully considered by designer and client at the initiation of every project and incorporated into the work as appropriate to the project scope. The Framework is intended to be accessible and relevant for every architect, every client, and every project, regardless of size, typology, or aspiration. Each submission will be reviewed with the Framework for Design Excellence in mind.

THE AIA MIAMI/ RIVA PRIZE (AIA Members from a chapter in the state of Florida ONLY )

The jury will look for inventive and comprehensive approaches in developing a sustainable language for building in dynamic climatic environments. Additionally, successful entries will demonstrate how each project contributes to the following sustainable goals: connecting materiality with building; demonstrating climate equity, addressing climate adaptation. Projects must put forth a clear architectural agenda for energy and environment in each submission.

The jury will evaluate submissions based on material inventiveness, sophistication, and success of design strategies to achieve the three sustainable themes described below. Each project submission should aspire to address each of the three sustainable design strategies; however, a project that does not address all the sustainable strategies will be scored on the strategies met.

The Winner of the AIA Miami RIVA Prize will receive a trip for two to Spain (total value not to exceed $10,000.)
