Downtown Sailing Series at Elliott Bay Marina

For more than two decades, the Downtown Sailing Series has brought energy, connection, and tradition to the Seattle waterfront. What began as a simple idea to gather sailors has grown into one of the longest running weekly regattas in the region and a defining part of the Elliott Bay Marina experience.

The series was created to build a stronger relationship with the sailing community and to offer something Seattle did not have at the time. An inclusive, laid-back race where participation mattered more than speed. Early races drew dozens of boats through word of mouth, and it quickly became clear that the mix of friendly competition, waterfront celebration, and a welcoming atmosphere was something special.

From the start, the vision combined racing with social energy. The docks came alive with music, sponsors, and post-race gatherings that turned Thursday nights into a summer ritual. Participation remained strong over the years, with new boats joining each season and growing crowds at the after party.

More than a race, the Downtown Sailing Series is about connection. It brings boaters together, strengthens relationships between tenants and staff, and invites the broader Seattle community to line the shoreline and watch the bay fill with sails. The culture is intentionally inclusive and approachable, creating an environment where seasoned racers and casual sailors feel equally at home.

The series has also played an important role in shaping the identity of Elliott Bay Marina. It helped redefine the marina as a welcoming place for all boaters and has become a reason many tenants choose to stay year after year. Milestone seasons, expanded sponsorships, and the return of racing after the pandemic have reinforced its role as a community touchstone.

Giving back has always been part of the tradition. Through charitable partnerships, volunteer involvement, and community fundraising, the series uses its platform to support the people and organizations that make the waterfront thrive.

Today, the Downtown Sailing Series continues to carry that spirit forward. It remains a fun, free weekly summer tradition that brings sailors, spectators, sponsors, and neighbors together on Thursday nights along the Seattle waterfront.
