Carl Bobis, the Scout Executive/CEO of the Northeast Iowa Council is taking part in Dubuque Chamber’s Dances with the Stars event on Saturday, June 3rd, 2023. The event targets a community-wide audience to highlight, educate, and create awareness of nonprofits’ role in our community. Carl joins 11 other dancers as they each raise money for a local nonprofit. Carl is raising money specifically to build the outreach program for disadvantaged communities.

About Carl

Carl and his wife Liz are recent transplants to the Dubuque area, most recently having lived in the St. Louis area. Carl has been a professional Scouter since 2004.

Dancing isn’t new for Carl. He grew up in a musical family (his mom was a music teacher) and sang in choirs including show choir, musicals, and operas…all of which had dance numbers. As an adult Carl enjoys going ballroom and swing dancing with his wife.

Why are you dancing?

It’s a wonderful way to showcase great things nonprofits are doing for our community and brings everyone together for a night of fun and entertainment. The chamber is a great partner and 100% of the funds the non-profits raise goes towards their cause, which is amazing. I also wanted to get out of my comfort zone a little, and show my friends, family and colleagues that I can have fun and let loose.

Why is outreach important to you and to Scouting?

I wanted to highlight the need for quality character development in our disadvantaged communities. Scouting is a perfect program to teach young men and women important life skills like personal growth, active citizenship, personal fitness, working together with a team, helping others, and leadership development.

I have personally worked with underserved youth throughout my career and it breaks my heart to see the challenges they face. But they are resilient, and I have seen that what we provide for them in Scouting has a profound difference in their lives.
