DOCFEST 2024 HOUSTON JAZZ CONCERT – CELEBRATING TEN YEARS!

“Celebration” is this year’s buzzword for DocFest, not only because of the event’s decennial, but because alumni headliners are celebrating three eras of HSPVA jazz excellence:

from “The Trongone Era”:

MARK HOLDEN, composer/arranger (HSPVA ’74 – the *first* graduating class!)

Edward Trongone (1919-1987) was HSPVA’s founding Director of Jazz Studies, 1971-76

from “The Early Doc Era”:

WARREN SNEED, saxophonist (HSPVA ’78)

“Doc” = Dr. Robert Morgan, HSPVA Director of Jazz Studies, 1976-99

from “The Late Doc Era”:

WALTER SMITH III, saxophonist/composer (HSPVA ’98)

The Mission of DocFest, Inc. is to support higher education for HSPVA alumni. This is primarily accomplished by an annual series of benefit concerts/reunions/jam sessions featuring successful HSPVA graduates and additional renowned artists. In consultation with Dr. Morgan and his wife, Helen, it has been established that funds generated by DocFest will primarily be dedicated to the Helen and Bob Morgan Jazz Scholarship Fund at New York’s New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, endowed by the Morgans (with assistance from SBC Foundation) in 1999.
