Hi Salem!
It's me, Smoky Santiago, and I'm officially running for Dog Mayor again this year!
Last year, I campaigned on my platform "Bullies Against Bullies," because every dog (and human!!) deserves kindness, friendship, and a safe place to play. I was also proud to open Salem's very first Stick Library - where pups could borrow a stick, leave a stick, and make a new friend along the way. I'm happy to report it's still one of my favorite community projects - come check it out the next time you're walking on Williams Street!
This year, though, my campaign comes with a more personal story.
Back in March, I was diagnosed with lymphoma. It was really scary for me and my paw-rents, but thanks to my family and a really great team of specialists, I completed my chemotherapy and radiation treatment. I'm so happy to say that I'm in full remission now!
That's why my campaign this year isn't just about spreading kindness - it's also about spreading awareness.
We as dogs can't use our words to tell our families when something doesn't feel right, so our humans are our biggest advocates. Mom and Dad noticed something wasn't right because they felt some lumps on my body and brought me to the vet. That early detection allowed my family to start my treatment as soon as possible, and it truly saved my life.
So as your hopeful Dog Mayor, I have one campaign message for all the humans out there:
Give your pups lots of love, plenty of treats, and don't ignore the little things. If something seems different - a new lump, swollen lymph nodes, unusual tiredness, or anything that just doesn't feel right - take them to the vet asap! Catching illness early can make all the difference.
Now...enough of all that serious stuff.
Let's get back to sharing sticks, making new friends, and proving once again that Bullies Against Bullies isn't just a slogan - it's a way of life.
I'd be honored to earn your vote again!
Love, snuggles, and plenty of kisses,
Smoky Santiago
