My Veterans Place Savannah is excited to offer the Dr. Doretha Walker Scholarship.
Dr. Doretha Walker was born in Danville, Kentucky into a military family. Her father served 30 years in the Army. Upon graduating from the University of Alabama she was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Army. She served honorably for 11 years serving in the logistical positions of battalion maintenance officer, company commander, and branch chief.
She received her Master of Public Administration (MPA) from Ball State University while on active duty. She later received her PhD in Public Policy and Administration from Walden University, specializing in Public Management and Leadership. Upon leaving the Army she held leadership positions in various industries such as shipping, manufacturing, airline security, nonprofits, and education. She is an educator, leader, collaborator, and community engager serving on the City of Savannah’s Recreation Commission.
She is a public speaker, author of Success by Association, Success by Acclamation, The Traits that built African American Women Leaders in the Area of Governance in South Carolina, an academic ebook, 369 Flights of Daily Devotion, and numerous academic accomplishments.
On June 26, 2022, Dr. Walker was the speaker at MVP's first Annual Gala and the scholarship was named in her honor. This scholarship is to support and encourage continued education. The scholarship program's aim is to offer financial support to students and to encourage serious and deserving high school seniors and undergraduates to continue their studies. We're looking forward to helping our future leaders.
