Who We Are

We are an inter tribal and inter generational federation of organizations. Core founding members include Turtle Clan of the Ramapough Munsee Lenape Nation, Soil & Souls, and Hawk Mountain Earth Center. Our core team has over 60 combined years of experience launching social justice and regenerative programs across the nation. We are community organizers, farmers, market managers, pastors, herbalists, healers and elders committed to reclaiming our traditions and healing our spirits and way of life.

Our Land Acquisition Campaign will result in a protected space for Indigenous practices, one where L’nu ancestral wisdom is embedded in site design, harvesting practices and communal activities. We envision families learning to grow food and medicine together, earth/landworkers being paid fairly for their labor, and young adults developing resilience leadership skills they implement in their own neighborhoods. Indigenous Mothers offer holistic support through the rematriation and ceremonial components of the nursery and mutual aid gardens.

We are prepared to receive and care for gifts of land. We offer First Nations title research and a rematriation deed where appropriate. For all co-owners of our land parcels, we provide a protected space for the Global Majority to gather and share cultural celebrations autonomously. We aim to guarantee our own protection and safety by self-determining our spiritual practices and customs in spite of previous criminalization within local jurisdictions.

We will do this while collaborating on Indigenous land management projects that include the full spectrum of the growing cycle - from seed saving to market distribution of produce, native plants and herbal medicines. We will offer a continuum of care for the land, the people engaged in caring for it, and those receiving the fruits of our labor. Land acquisition is central to our work because it provides a stable place to live and implement Indigenous land management in all seasons.

Our Land Journey

Indigenous Mothers Community Land Trust was created as a direct response to land insecurity, coupled with cultural and religious discrimination/persecution and the overall need to increase access to land for BIPOC farmers looking to reclaim Spiritual, Cultural and Food sovereignty. Crucial factors that led to our convergence and founding:

Following the evictions and loss of leased farmland during the pandemic, various community earth workers from New York and New Jersey came together to envision a roadmap for moving from land access to land sovereignty in our respective communities. During a farmers retreat held at WildSeed Community Farm in the Spring of 2021 an elder woman-led coalition formed with a vision to mentor young farmers and earth workers as resilience leaders, focusing on land and food sovereignty and cultural and spiritual upliftment. In the fall we formed Indigenous Mothers Community Land Trust. We incorporated the following spring and in February 2023, we received our tax-exempt status within 60 days of filing!

During the first phase of fundraising this year, we raised enough money to research a piece of property in Middletown, NY. We have retained $50,000 for future land care/purchase;

AND we still have sufficient operating expenses!!! WHOHOO We have stabilized!!! Because of our federated business model, we do not have the overhead most nonprofits must contend with so we are moving onward towards greater financial sovereignty in the form of a small endowment . WE GIVE THANKS TO CREATOR for the friends and allies who did the heavy lifting to get us to this point. When we experienced breach of contract this summer on the property in Middletown, we decided not to pursue legal recourse so that the funds you gave us for land would actually be used for land. We are grateful to be moving forward from a position of strength.
