Las Animas County Dept. of Human Services (LACDHS), in partnership with the South Central Council of Governments (SCCOG), is reaching out for your assistance. In recent weeks, the federal government shutdown has created various impacts throughout our country. The biggest one that has come to fruition in our county is a withholding of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits (a.k.a., Electronic Benefits Transfer or EBT benefits; a.k.a., the Food Stamp Program).

The USDA Food and Nutrition Services (FNS), who administers SNAP, has suspended all SNAP benefits for the month of November 2025. This means that nearly 3040+ residents (approx. 50% children, 20% elderly, and 10% disabled) within Las Animas County will have no available SNAP funds to purchase food and other necessities within our county until the federal government reopens for business. This also means that Las Animas County will lose approximately $547,000+ in potential revenue during the month of November. Moreover, the largest impact to our county and its 14,000+ population is an increase in food insecurities over the next few weeks. Many individuals and families may go hungry during the month of November, unless we act swiftly to make every attempt to mitigate this crisis; and, although we can’t replace $547,000 in funding, we absolutely want to try to meet the needs of our community as best as possible.

This amount will ensure that we can help establish a fund, which will allow us to provide grocery store vouchers to SNAP eligible clients, allowing them to put food on their tables; and, although it each family will receive a significantly lesser amount their their SNAP benefits might provide, something is better than nothing.

Our passion lies in ensuring that every child, parent, grandparent, and Las Animas County resident in need, irrespective of their socio-economic background, have access to nutrition during this suspension period. The successful implementation of this project is centered around our community coming together to ensure that we Las Animas County Dept. of Human Services lessen the impact on every level.
