Marie-Claude and I started EVkids back in 1980 to work with low-income inner-city kids, starting with a summer camp in Vermont. Many of our campers were struggling in school: In 1985, Marie-Claude and Rebecca, a volunteer counselor from Harvard, started a tutoring and mentoring program in Dorchester, matching eight of our at-risk campers with eight Harvard students for weekly sessions which were life-transforming for both sides of the equation. The camp now has its own site on nine acres tucked into the Green Mountain National Forest, with three sessions each summer. Kids climb mountains, go swimming, play volleyball and ping-pong, do theatre improv and other arts, and learn to live and grow together in a mutually supportive community. The tutoring and mentoring program has grown to 130 pairs this fall, with four sites in Dorchester and Roxbury and student volunteers from six campuses, as well as a totally virtual site. 100% of the kids who stick with the program go to college, and we now have a College Success mentoring program to make sure they graduate from college. In short, EVkids changes lives. Please check us out at evkids.org and help as you are able. I will match every donation up to my goal of $5,000, which means $10,000 for EVkids! Many thanks!
