Ohio City Fundraiser Convex Mirrors!

Ohio City is proudly a walkable community filled with walkers, dog walkers, runners, cyclists, and wheelchair users. Part of what makes our neighborhood so walkable is the proliferation of alleys, reducing the number of curb cuts on each block. For the curb cuts to alleys that do exist, however, there is often times poor visibility, creating a higher risk of collisions.

There are at least 45 alleys in the Ohio City neighborhood, almost none of which are one way and most of which intersect with various streets. This creates about 150 sidewalk and alley intersection points where a car can exit from an alley onto the street. About of third of these locations are considered unsafe by residents due to the poor visibility between pedestrians and cars. In most cases this is due to a structure such as a house or garage abutting the sidewalk and the alleyway creating a right angle and blocking the view for both sidewalk users and alley users. Due to the frequent use of sidewalks and alleys along with poor visibility and high risk of accidents in these areas, convex mirrors are suggested to install at high-risk locations.

After this problem was brought up at a block club meeting, then echoed at another block club, Ohio City Inc. created a survey for residents to enter suggested locations for convex mirrors at alley exit points throughout the neighborhood and conducted an inventory. The findings concluded that out of at least 45 alleys in the neighborhood, 18 have intersections with poor visibility at a total of 48 unique locations.
